At the initiative and with the technical organization of Cycling Club Perun, under MOC patronage, the international Olympic Day (June 23rd) was celebrated in forest park Trebjesa, Niksic, in an event called "Niksic, the city of sport".

In addition to cyclists, the event was supported by a number of athletes and sport clubs: FK Anderba, athletes AK Niksic, judoists DzK Trebjesa, basketball players KK Sutjeska, handball players RK Trebjesa, hikers PSD Javorak, the Company of skateboarders, PK Trebjesa, Proteini SIScout troop Orlovi, Red Cross Youth Club and others.

The event was opened by Dusan Simonovic, the president of MOC, who reminded the audience about the history of modern Olympic Games, which were revived after the extraordinary Pierre de Coubertin formed the International Olympic Committee on June 23rd 1984. "Olympism uses sport as a tool to promote the idea of universal values, such as the efforts towards: world peace, against discrimination of any kind, environmental protection, removing doping from sport, involving women, etc."

Olympic gold medallist Igor Vusurovic, the director of Youth and Sport, stated that we must strive to direct the generations to come towards sport and adoption of olympic values such as friendship and tolerance.

Olympic Day was also attended by the Mayor Veselin Grbovic, who pointed out that Niksic is a city of sport and that its athletes have, for many decades, won medals on World and European Championships, and participated at the Olympic Games.

A number of citizens, both younger and older, were able to compete in several sports at the event: biking mountain race at 1,500m, promotional athletic race across the mountain, hiking-climbing to the Trebjesa's top and skating. Additionally, they could test their skills on the horizontal bar and ball juggling, as well as familiarize themselves with other sports: handball, basketball, judo, football and body building - presented by the members of Niksic sports clubs.

Ana Petrovic Njegos has, in the name of BK Perun, awarded letters of thanks to all of participants, and emphasized that the goal of the event is to show the sport as an universal language among people, without distinction or division into male and female, as well as to encourage others to be involved in sports and activity holidays in nature.

The Olympic Day was introduced in 1948 to commemorate the birth of the modern Olympic Games on June 23rd 1894. On this day, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was founded after the idea was suggested by French Baron Pierre de Coubertin.

June 23rd is celebrated across the world as the Olympic Day: hundreds of thousands of people – young and old – are competing in sports and other activities. The aim of the event is to promote participation in sport globally, regardless of age, gender or athletic abilities of the participant.

The Olympic Movement calls on all people around the world to be active on this day. Under the motto "Move, learn, discover", the national olympic committees are organizing various sport, cultural and educational activities in order to encourage citizens to learn the benefits of physical activity, discover new sports, and most importantly, embrace the Olympic values – excellence, friendship and respect.
