AIDS Healthcare Foundation kicked off its Mobile HIV testing initiative (Ehsäs) in India in March this year and has since then conducted tests in various cities in India.

The number of AIDS cases in New Delhi rose from 498 in 2000 to 5,082 in 2007; the pandemic presented a serious challenge a serious challenge.
With 33 million people living HIV/AIDS and only 3 million on treatment there was a global crisis that could not be ignored. AHF have successfully fought for universal access to treatment and made it a potential reality, however, it was not possible until universal access to free and easy HIV testing was created.

AHF Campaign

The One Million Tests World AIDS Day 2008 campaign called for testing programs around the world to step up the efforts, break the mold and do things differently. Adapted pre-test counseling sessions to group sessions. Set higher daily/weekly/ monthly testing goals. Seeked out new rapid test kit modalities. Broke out of the clinic and put up a tent in community to provide fast and easy testing for the people.
The initiative made cutting-edge HIV medical care and services accessible to the grass-roots level of the community as well as targeted toward the socio-economic strata at high risk for HIV exposure.

“As we move forward toward global AIDS control, the most daunting task is to identify and treat the people with HIV who do not know that they are infected,” said Michael Weinstein, President AHF.

According to Dr. Chinkholal Thangsing, Asia Pacific Bureau Chief, for the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), “We can no longer wait for people to take themselves to inaccessible VCT centers. We have to find ways to bring testing to the people – where they are, where they work and where they live. Confidentiality must be maintained, quality testing modalities utilized, safer sex and prevention information provided and support and treatment referrals immediately offered to positive clients post disclosure. However, we must scale-up testing and knock down the barriers that are allowing preventable virus transmissions and deaths.”
