Monday 14th July 2014

Time is rapidly running out for anyone who wants to participate in what is one of the biggest Fèisean in the country, with youngsters being offered tutelage from some of the best traditional musicians in Scotland. Fèis Eilean an Fhraoich, based in Lewis, will kick-off on Monday 21st July and run until the following Friday, with all classes being run at Stornoway Primary School.

It will cover a range of disciplines - instruments, Gaelic singing, drama and dancing - and all abilities are catered for, from those who just want a basic introduction right up to more advanced practitioners. There will be a croileagan class for children aged 3-4, a separate class for children between primary 1 and 3, and a teen Fèis for those a little more experienced run by Catriona Watt and Andy Yearley.

A showcase concert featuring some of the Fèis tutors and participants will be held at An Lanntair, Stornoway, on Wednesday evening and the week-long festivities will come to a close on Friday with two concerts, one in the afternoon and one in the evening.

Peigi Maclennan, Fèis Eilean an Fhraoich’s chairperson said: "Many of the traditional Gaelic singers and musicians we see today owe their grounding to the Fèisean movement and that is as true of Fèis Eilean an Fhraoich as any other. We are looking forward to a very busy and successful week and, once again, we have secured some of the best tutors around, who will be passing on their skills to the youngsters."

The tutors who will be at Fèis Eilean an Fhraoich this year include Noel Eadie, Jane Hepburn, Matthew Maclennan and Màiri Macleod.

The committee also appealed for any volunteers to help out at break times and lunchtimes.
