ATLANTA – August 21, 2014 – Operation HOPE today announced a generous grant of $225,000 from The UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of UPS. The lion's share of the grant goes to support HOPE Coalition America (HCA), and its emergency preparedness and disaster recovery initiatives. The UPS Foundation will also sponsor Operation HOPE's 2014 Global Forum.
"This commitment by The UPS Foundation will help us respond to Americans and small businesses in need of urgent crisis assistance and resources," said Oliver Bell, director of HOPE Coalition America and CEO of the Southern Region. “When human and natural disaster strikes, HCA is dedicated to helping victims rebuild their lives, families and communities."
The contribution will also support a series of “Lunch and Learn” seminars to be conducted with private sector companies for their employees. HCA, the only financial emergency preparedness and recovery service in the country, has helped more than 750,000 individuals and small business recovering from such disasters as hurricanes along our nation's coasts, tornados in the heartland, flooding in southern and mid-western states, and major storms in Alabama, Arkansas, and Mississippi.
Since its formation in 2001, the result of a partnership with the Department of Homeland Security and FEMA, HOPE Coalition America has strengthened and expanded the financial counseling resources available to help individuals and families prepare for disasters and recover in the shortest possible time. In 2013, HCA expanded services, signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the American Red Cross as a second-step responder to help the communities they serve in the aftermath of large scale catastrophes.
Established in 1951 and based in Atlanta, Georgia, The UPS Foundation identifies specific areas where its backing clearly impacts social issues. In support of this strategic approach, The UPS Foundation has identified the following four focus areas for giving: volunteerism, diversity, community safety and environmental sustainability.
The UPS Foundation was established by UPS founder Jim Casey in 1951, and leads UPS's corporate citizenship efforts. In 2013, The UPS Foundation provided US$50.7 million in global philanthropy to non-profit organizations. In addition, UPS employees and retirees contributed US $51.3 million to United Way, and UPS employees and their families recorded 1.8 million hours of volunteer service on six continents to help make our world more sustainable.
