Amref Health Africa South Sudan believes that the Outreach Programme can greatly help to address the backlog of surgical cases in state hospitals, as many patients cannot afford to access private medical services available in Juba or out of the country.

The latest Amref Health Africa clinical and surgical outreach mission provided in Warrap State handled 270 cases, including 151 operations. The number has more than doubled from the last outreach mission, which was conducted barely three months ago, underlining the need for increased frequency of the service.

The four-day outreach to Kuajok State Hospital, which has no dental surgeon, also benefited patients with dental problems.

Dr Garang Deng, a surgeon from Juba Teaching Hospital, and Dr Lydia Kiiyo, a dentist from Kenya, together with medical officers at Kuajok Hospital provided the treatment, which attracted people from Warrap State and beyond.

“We operated on patients with tumors, like one lady who had advanced level breast cancer, amongst other surgical cases.” said Dr Garang.

Minister applauds the programme

Madam Nyawut Maya Kual, Minister of Health of Warrap State, who visited the team at the hospital, applauded Amref Health Africa for providing the clinical and surgical services to the state hospital.

She noted that the organisation was playing an important role in proving health service to the people of Warrap state in particular and South Sudan in general. “I would like to thank you, on behalf of the people of Warrap State, for bringing medical services to us. The people are happy,” the minister said.

Director General of Kuajok State Hospital Dr Ring Chuon described the support as timely and asked for support in  equipping of medical officers with skills. “We need our doctors to take part in the activities and learn from you when you come here,” said Dr Ring.

This was the second time outreach mission to Kuajok Hospital. The first one took place in April, when the hospitals received many gunfire wounded patients in Bentiue Unity State arising from the civil upheaval then.

The mission was funded by GIZ on behalf of the German Government.
