In the first-ever contest between Chinese Taipei and a team from the Coastal Plain League, the Forest City Owls held their ground on Monday night at McNair Field.
Conor Clancey and Joey Hawkins delivered RBI’s and Taylor Thurber combined with two relievers to hold the international team to two runs in a 2-2 tie.
The Owls got on the board early taking a 1-0 nothing lead after Clancey drove in Steven Pallares in the first inning.
Hunter Bryant, who had two hits on the night, started a two out rally in the sixth inning and was followed by singles from Clancey and Wenzel before Joey Hawkins walked with bases loaded to tie the game at two.
In a game that was scheduled for seven innings, Taylor Thurber went five innings for the Owls allowing two runs on three hits and struck out three. Rob Thomas and Christian Pfaff each threw a scoreless inning to hold Chinese Taipei to two runs.
The Owls have an off day tomorrow before taking on the Gastonia Grizzlies at McNair Field on Wednesday night. Before the game there will be a youth clinic so make sure to get your tickets at forestcitybaseball.com or at the box office before the game.
The Owls will continue the 2014 season at home Monday night they take on Chinese Taipei at 7:30. The Owls will also take on the Chinese Taipei National team on July 7th.
The Coastal Plain League is the nation’s hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 18th season in 2014, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. The CPL has had over 1,200 alumni drafted and 69 of those – including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander – make their Major League debut; while another notable alum - Russell Wilson - won Super Bowl XLVIII.
