The Cycling Australia Course Review Panel has tabled a host of course recommendations for the 2018 Fed Uni Road National Championships’ three-year agreement in Ballarat from 2018-2020.

A host of Australia’s elite cyclists and astute cycling minds formed the Panel including 2016 Paris-Roubaix winner and 2006 Commonwealth Games road race gold medallist Mathew Hayman; former pro-continental rider and Ballarat native Pat Shaw; dual criterium national champion Kimberley Wells; Wiggle-High5 Sport Director and Australian National Women's Team Director Donna Rae-Szalinski, and CA General Manager of Sport Kipp Kaufmann.

Beginning discussions mid-2017, the Panel analysed elements critical to both riders and spectators, while considering the course options and opportunities present in the region.

These recommendations include increasing the technical elements of the criterium while maintaining the energetic and vibrant CBD locations, plus a number of alterations to the time trial course which will increase spectator interest and technical challenges for the riders.

The famous Buninyong road race circuit was seen by all members as an ideal championship course which has been proven by countless mouth-watering finales and the crowning of a host of new champions.

However the Panel has recommend a change be considered to allow a flat course option using other roads and areas of the region, allowing for opportunities for all riders and spectators to be engaged in the event.

Cycling Australia is pleased with the robust discussions and recommendations for changes to the Championships in Ballarat,” said Kipp Kaufmann, CA General Manager of Sport.

“The full implementation of these recommendations will begin as we continue to engage with Ballarat City Council, Victoria Police and our Event Delivery Partners to ensure their support for this evolution.

“While we might not see radical changes immediately in 2018, we are committed to see changes in the Championships courses over the next three years."

The Panel will continue discussions over the three-year period including conducting a review after each Championships.

The official 2018 Fed Uni Road National Championship courses will be announced in mid-late October 2017.
