Patricia Engeler’s Mysterious Waters at Agora Gallery

New York, NY, USA, March 20, 2013 - (PressReleasePoint) -Patricia Engeler’s beautiful explorations into what she calls the “ever-changing nature of water” capture both the fragility of the ocean’s surface and the mystery of its depths. Her seascapes edit out any hint of land, leaving the interlocking pulses of the open water to create movement: the flecks of light on a wave, the shifting reflections, the haze in the air as foam sprays upwards. This compositional approach turns Engeler’s canvases into something approaching Abstraction, with only amorphous shapes to guide the viewer. Heightened yet realistic, Engeler’s palette does almost all the work of defining forms and planes. A single color in her hands is remarkably flexible, drawn out to its brightest and darkest to create the elusive fluid texture of clear water. These seas and lakes may be neon orange in a sunset or deep violet amidst a storm, and they consistently suggest that they hide more than they reveal.
Patricia Engeler was born in Brazil and has worked in acrylic, watercolor, and mixed media in addition to oil. She currently resides in Switzerland.
