The 2014 Petitt Cup Championship Series will take place starting Thursday, August 14 between the Peninsula Pilots, representing the East, and Florence RedWolves out of the West. Game one will be held at Sparrow Stadium in Florence, S.C. while game two and game three (if necessary) will shift to War Memorial Stadium in Hampton, Va.
The Peninsula Pilots claimed a spot in the Petitt Cup final for the second consecutive year after beating the Wilson Tobs in the East Division Final. The Pilots first took down the Fayettevile SwampDogs in three games before meeting the Tobs in round two. The Tobs pushed the reigning champs to three games, but Peninsula ultimately prevailed with a 14-1 victory over the Tobs in game three on Tuesday to win the East.
Meanwhile the Florence RedWolves made the playoffs for the first time since 2010 after winning both the first and second-half division titles in the West. They took down High Point-Thomasville in two games before advancing to the West Division Final, where they matched up with Gastonia. It was a very entertaining series that went the full three games and included big comebacks, as well as a sixteen-inning affair in game one that tied the longest game in Petitt Cup Playoff history. Ultimately the RedWolves prevailed in the final game of the series Tuesday night, 1-0, and will head to the Petitt Cup Championship Series in search of the franchise’s first-ever championship.
