Over 30 football clubs from all over the Philippines are set to compete in the PFF-Smart National Club Championship, which is being organized for the fourth straight year by the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) and wireless services leader Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart).
Cluster rounds will start on August 22 in eight regions, mostly in Mindanao. Top teams will advance to the group qualifiers where they will battle it out with five seeded teams, including reigning and two-time champion Ceres-La Salle Football Club of Negros Occidental.
Winners of the group qualifiers will move on to the national stage in October where they will compete with the top teams of the United Football League – Kaya, Meralco, and Global football clubs. The final matches will be held at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila.
“Once again, we are training the spotlight on the enormous potential of our local football players. The development of grassroots football in the Philippines is always a top priority for the PFF, for this is where we discover more talents that can represent the country on the world stage,” said Cyril Dofitas, head of PFF’s tournaments department.
“Aside from being a venue to highlight local talents, this competition also raises the standards of local football associations,” he added.
“We are happy to partner with PFF once again to provide opportunities for football clubs all over the country to showcase their talents and skills. This is in line with the advocacy of our chairman, Manny V. Pangilinan, of promoting and developing sports in the different regions of the Philippines,” said Smart sports marketing senior manager Epok Quimpo.
Smart is a staunch supporter of the national football team Philippine Azkals, which is set to defend its crown against foreign competitors at the 3rd Philippine Peace Cup next month.
