PGCC's International Cup, A Tight Match to the Last Putt
It isn’t a stretch to think that students at a school filled with golfers would take competition very seriously but every semester that is exactly what happens, competition gets serious.
It isn’t a stretch to think that students at a school filled with golfers would take competition very seriously but every semester that is exactly what happens, competition gets serious.
The International Cup marks the close of a semester, and nearly the last tournament graduating seniors will play at PGCC. In typical tournament fashion all of the preceding matches serve to prepare players for the most challenging showdown at the end of each semester. After making it through the last 6 weeks of qualifying tournaments, the top 36 students compete against the faculty in 4 ball matches, modified alternate shot matches.
Held at the SCGA Golf Course, on March 23rd and 24th, this semester’s match was a nail-biter right to the last putt. The final score was 12 ½ for the faculty, to the student’s 11 ½. A close match, to be sure, but the thrill of neck and neck competition came to a screeching halt when, on the last putt of the last hole, Eric Smith, playing for the faculty, sank a par putt to square his individual match.
The faculty gained one point early on in the match, giving them a single point lead to take home the title. Some may call it the luck of the draw, but the faculty at PGCC have taken instruction to a whole new level, teaching students a thing or two, not just in the classroom, but on the course as well.
