Phone firm plans $50bn renewables investment

India’s mobile phone company Airvoice has formed a joint venture with state run power group Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN) to pursue plans for investing $50bn in building a 13 gigawatts (GW) of solar and wind capacity over the next decade. 

The partners intend to build 10GW of photovoltaic arrays and 3GW of wind farms across 12 wasteland sites in the south-western sites state of Karnataka. The first phase will include 100 megawatts (MW) of solar capacity and 200MW of wind and will be commissioned by 2013. 

Airvoice will hold a 51% stake in the projects.
