Lawrence General Hospital, Lawrence, Mass.
Lawrence General Hospital is a community hospital in the Boston-metro region that sees 72,000 ED visits a year. Since implementing Picis ED PulseCheck™ in 2005 as its firstelectronic health record (EHR)system, the organization has increased efficiency and physician productivity, and eliminated post-shift dictation of patient charts, which alone saves $600,000 a year. In addition, Lawrence General improved the accuracy of clinical documentation, reportedly increased revenue capture by $5 million in the first year, decreased average length of stay in the ED from 190 minutes to 120 minutes and reduced the rate of patients who left without being seen from six to one percent. Lawrence General is also in the process of developing anHIE, which leverages ED PulseCheck and shares critical data across up to 50 EMRs and more than 4,000 community physicians. -
Cape Cod Healthcare, Hyannis, Mass.
Cape Cod Healthcare is comprised of two hospitals with 259 beds. The larger of the two hospitals is Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, which services nearly 90,000 ED patients annually. With 67 percent of Cape Cod Hospital’s admissions coming through its ED, it is a critical point of entry for the hospital and one challenged to handle huge spikes in seasonal volume during summer months. Using the ED PulseCheckemergency department information system (EDIS), Cape Cod Hospital dropped its average waiting room time to 25 minutes or less and reengineered processes to optimize use of the technology. Now 90 percent of patients bypass the waiting room altogether, heading directly to treatment areas where they are seen by clinical staff. The average time to see a physician in Cape Cod’s EDs is less than 35 minutes, and the hospital was recently ranked #1 for patient satisfaction nationally by Press Ganey Associates, Inc. In addition to operational and patient flow improvements, the health system reports that it has decreased its average time-to-bill by six days and generated a $700,000 increase in intravenous medication services revenue with clinical documentation intervention.
