BROOKINGS, S.D. – Jan. 9, 2014 – Princess Cruises’ new ship, Royal Princess®, began its maiden voyage from Southampton in the United Kingdom last June with the world’s largest LED video display in a cruise ship application that was designed and manufactured by Daktronics (Nasdaq – DAKT) of Brookings, S.D. Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, was on hand at the naming ceremony and christened the ship on June 13 prior to its first departure on the open seas.
“All aspects of the relationship with Daktronics from early planning through installation and post-installation system checks have been of the highest standard,” said Electrical Superintendent of Princess Cruises David Garbett. “This is now our fourth Daktronics screen and their performance and reliability have been exceptional. We have found a number of advantages from Daktronics including immediate response time to any query, technical or other, and their world-wide support is very comprehensive. This is their core business and their commitment to the LED display product is quite clear. Each project has always hit budget, met our strict installation requirements and performed beyond our expectations with no surprises, which in the current financial climate is very important in planning such work.”
Daktronics teamed with system integrator, HMS of Gorizia, Italy, and Miami, FL, for the installation and commissioning of the screen. Located on the upper deck of the ship overlooking the on-board pool, this display enhances the cruise experience of Movies Under the Stars®, a Princess Cruises staple where every night a feature film is shown.
The display uses 10 millimeter line spacing of Surface Mount Device (SMD) LEDs, a 3-in1 package of red, green and blue LEDs that allows for excellent image clarity and contrast. It measures approximately 20 feet tall by 33.5 feet wide – 60 square meters – to ensure the movie viewing is an unforgettable experience.
“HMS worked closely with the Ship Yard to coordinate design, fabricate and build the structure, and perform installation and commissioning of the Daktronics screen and control system. We’ve worked extensively with Princess Cruises on numerous AV system projects, including the Royal Princess.” said Christophe Grignon, CEO of HMS.
The display provides wide angle visibility to provide a great view to people gathered around the pool and bar area on the upper deck. It also features multiple levels of protection from the numerous environmental challenges encountered at sea.
“On behalf of our Daktronics team, it is a distinct pleasure to partner with Princess Cruise Lines and HMS on such a fantastic new ship, The Royal Princess,” said Peter Dunkle, Daktronics sales representative. “The display will feature amazing views for their customers on the upper level pool deck and enhance the Movies Under the Stars feature. It’s a credit to Daktronics extensive product engineering and production that our outdoor 10 millimeter SMD technology matches the extreme environmental conditions of the open seas.”
Daktronics LED video and messaging display technology offers a long lifetime with minimal maintenance and low power consumption, providing value and excitement for years to come.
