Ahmedabad, Gujarat, September 10, 2015 -(PressReleasePoint)- The next big change in mobile devices will be in the human interface. This is what President and CEO of Ricoh Innovations Corporation, Dr Nikhil Balram told the students of Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) on Thursday (September 10, 2015). Dr Balram, who is also a guest faculty at IITGN was giving a talk on “Light Field Imaging and Display – A System Perspective”.
Dr Balram told the students that smart phone has evolved so much that it has become like mini super computers and along with this, the next big thing that will happen is wearable human interface. Referring to research that he recently did, Dr Balram said, “Wearable human interface module is going to drive a transition from smart phone to mobile information gateway and provide true mobility.”
The talk provided a brief introduction to light fields and the latest innovations to capture light fields using compact imaging systems and discussed some promising early applications. Displaying information using light fields has also become possible, enabling true 3D displays that provide a natural and comfortable experience. Dr Balram further told the students that there are significant design choices that need to be made for different types of applications. “In both cases – light field imaging and light field display – the overall system has to be designed considering a complex set of tradeoffs, some of which are still not fully understood,” he said.
