Press brake is another material processing method.  In the press brake method the material is positioned over the die block. The die block presses the sheet to form the desired shape.  Most of the time bending technology has to overcome both tensile stresses as well as compressive stresses to the formed material. When bending occurs, the residual stress causes the material to spring back towards its original position.

In effect the sheet must be over bent in order to overcome this property. This will result in the desired form. The amount of spring back depends on the material. When sheet material is bent, it stretches in length. The bend deduction is actually the amount the sheet metal will stretch when bent as measured.
