Water selects Black & Veatch for £16 millionLlwyn Onn rebuild contract

REDHILL, UK (14 JUNE 2011) – A major refurbishment of Dee Valley Water’slargest water treatment works will provide long-term security and quality ofwater supplies to Wrexham and the surrounding area. Tendered as a singleproject, Black & Veatch has been appointed as design and build partner toupgrade and replace the ageing water treatment assets at Llwyn Onn watertreatment works.

Black & Veatch Bid Manager Mat Fairfax said: “Our fully integrateddesign and construction delivery model was a key differentiator in our beingawarded this important project.

“A prominent consideration in our design will be to minimise operationalcost and energy consumption which is of critical importance. Additionally, weare committed to minimise the works’ environmental impact throughwaste-efficient design and construction execution that fulfils carbon reductionand waste-to-landfill objectives.”

The rebuilt works will be constructed within the constraints of the existingsite and the new structures will be designed and built off-line whilst theexisting treatment facility remains in operation. As well as improving watersecurity, the introduction of a secondary treatment process will further ensurecustomers continue to benefit from the highest standards of water quality.

The £16 million upgrade forms the largest single project being deliveredunder Dee Valley Water’s five-year AMP5 Capital Investment Programme, which ismainly targeted at the renewal of assets that are approaching the end of theiruseful lives.

The contract will be executed in two phases. The six-month design periodbegan in April 2011, and will be followed by an 18-month construction period.All works are planned to be complete by April 2013.

The appointment furthers Black & Veatch’s 20-year relationship with DeeValley Water in supporting the water company’s need to meet environmentalrequirements and fulfil customer expectations with a secure and high-qualitywater service.

Editor’s Notes:

  • Llwyn Onn WTW is Dee Valley Water’s largest treatment works. The existingworks has a capacity of 48 megalitres per day (Ml/d) and treats water from bothriver and upland sources.
  • The rebuilt works will comprise all of the treatment processes andancillary works, from the raw water inlet pipe to a post-contact tank outletpipe connection to the existing 18 megalitre storage reservoir. Some elementsof the existing works will be retained and integrated into the new works.
  • The new works will include a second filtration stage for the removal ofmanganese to further ensure water quality.
