The overall cost of retail crime in the UK has soared by 15.6% in a year to £1.6bn.

The latest Retail Crime Survey published by the British Retail Consortium (BRC) revealed that the retail sector suffered 2 million shoplifting incidents each year involving around £200 million worth of goods. The average value of goods stolen in each offence has risen 28% to £109.

"Why should shoppers pay more whilst others pay nothing"

is a phrase often used by Tony Morgan, the Founder and MD of Internet Eyes.

' Whilst families have budgeted, worked that extra shift and have even held down second jobs, why is it that shoplifting is accepted as a petty crime? What’s more, this has a profound effect on our community retailers. Internet Eyes passionately believes that creating this online community  then this criminal activity can be stamped out.'

This sentiment is mirrored by Daniel Wilson, who operates 5 Nisa Local premises in Scarborough, who has recently had the Internet Eyes system installed.

' Shrinkage is an obvious concern for all retailers. If £10 of stock is taken from the shelves then  £10 of profit has to be earnt to balance the bottom line. In the long run if this continues then it's going to result in higher prices for all other customers.  Having the Internet Eyes system  has assisted the staff in capturing a number of shoplifters with video evidence of their crimes, which has aided in their arrest.'

Internet Eyes utilises the desire of members of the public to assist in reducing crime by monitoring privately owned CCTV footage from retail premises. The instant they spot an incident they can send an alert to staff in real time with the opportunity of being rewarded up to £250 each month for their vigilance. With over 8000 activated members spread throughout the EU, Internet Eyes captured the Big Society spirit wanting to make a difference.

Although a proven loss prevention solution, in Mr Morgan’s words

' the system could have been more efficient, and that is why Internet Eyes is proud to announce the launch of  the new website http://www.interneteyes.co.uk which includes the Instant Playback feature. Instant Playback allows in-store staff to review the alerts sent by Internet Eyes members’ immediately prior to the observed incident. This footage can be accessed from any smartphone, tablet and PC.'

With the re-launch of this new technological development Tony Morgan is even more confident that the video evidence of the incidents will prove beyond doubt that Internet Eyes can and does help to detect and deter crime, so reducing the burden on families across the UK whilst supporting the community and high street retailers.
