With uninsured numbers increasing in San Diego County, crucial breast cancer programs and treatments funded by Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, San Diego need support now more than ever.

San Diego, CA, October 26, 2011 - (PressReleasePoint) - Breast Cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women and will affect nearly 50,000 men and women in San Diego this year.  It's the leading cause of death among women ages 40-59.
 
More than 15,000 participants are expected to take part in the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, San Diego 15^th Annual Race for the Cure in Balboa Park on November 6.
 
Komen San Diego has named Ingrid Qua the 2011 Honorary Breast Cancer Survivor. In her many roles as businesswoman, advocate, adoptive and birth mother, Ingrid’s battle cry is, “Make A Difference” as tattooed on her wrist. As the Honorary Breast Cancer Survivor, Ingrid will be a spokesperson and will address the audience at the start of the Race as well as lead runners and walkers in a pace car.
 
Susan G. Komen for the Cure, San Diego calls all San Diegans to come out and support the under and un-insured women and men of San Diego County to ensure all people can get the services and treatment necessary to survive breast cancer. Breast cancer strikes women during their most productive years - both personally and professionally. Everyone is affected by breast cancer - it's a family disease. We don't know what causes it, and we don't have a cure.

The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Series, the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world, raises significant funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrates breast cancer survivorship and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease. Since its inception in 1983, the Komen Race for the Cure Series has grown from one local Race with 800 participants to a global series of more than 120 Races with more than 1 million people expected to participate in 2011.
 
The Komen Race for the Cure is a unique event, designed and implemented to promote positive awareness, education and early detection of breast cancer. It has proved to be an enormously effective way to reach many women and men with the message that breast cancer is not necessarily fatal if mammography and breast self-exam become routine. As well as being a road race for runners, the Komen Race for the Cure is an emotionally charged event that attracts many first timers and recreational runners.
