Washington, D.C. – As the self-imposed deadline for a deal on the future of Iran’s nuclear capability nears, the Center for American Progress’ Benjamin Armbruster has released an issue brief outlining key components that the deal should include to ensure Iran’s nuclear program is used only for peaceful purposes.

While recent reports suggest that the two sides are far from a deal and are negotiating an extension, the brief titled, “Toward a Final Nuclear Deal with Iran,” lays out the key components that must be agreed to when and if the negotiations are successful.

“Putting Iran’s nuclear program under lock and key will make the United States and its partners in the Middle East more secure,” Armbruster said. “A plan that gives Iran the opportunity to pursue a very limited, peaceful nuclear enrichment program but includes a robust international system of inspections will prevent Iran from building nuclear weapons, lower the possibility for military altercations, reduce the likelihood of nuclear proliferation in other states in the region, and limit the opportunity for terrorist groups from gaining access to fissile material.”

The negotiations between Iran and an international partnership composed of the United States, France, China, the United Kingdom, Russia and Germany—known as the P5+1—are currently taking place in Vienna, Austria. Building off of an interim agreement from November that froze Iran’s nuclear program and allowed for increased inspections in exchange for modest sanctions relief, the P5+1 and Iran have been working toward a deal that would work out the contours of a long-term, comprehensive plan to prevent Iran from building a nuclear weapon.
