Heidelberg Graduate School for Humanities and Social Sciences opens the academic year

The Heidelberg Graduate School for Humanities and Social Sciences (HGGS) opens the academic year with a festive event on Thursday, 22 October 2009 on the premises of the School at Heidelberg University. In its course, 24 doctoral students who have embarked on their doctoral dissertations at the School in the last few months will be reporting briefly on their workings.

The ceremony begins with words of welcome from Prof. Dr. Thomas Maissen, chairman of the steering committee of the Heidelberg Graduate School for Humanities and Social Sciences. The dissertations subsequently presented are on subjects from the fields of theology, musicology, English and German language and literature studies, history and others. Titles include “Confessional Identities in Ecumenical Processes” and “Exchanges in the Palliative Ward: Interaction between Physicians and the Families of Patients Undergoing Intensive Palliative Care”.

The Heidelberg Graduate School for Humanities and Social Sciences is run jointly by the Faculties of Philosophy, Modern Languages, Theology and Behavioural and Cultural Studies. The HGGS provides structured postgraduate education for doctoral students from these Faculties. It includes interdisciplinary courses, intensive supervision of dissertations and ongoing support from a coach or mentor.
