Research and Education Community to Gather in San Francisco for the 2017 Internet2 Technology Exchange Meeting

Presentations will focus on the latest technology solutions and community-led efforts to address emerging challenges in support of scientific research, network research, and higher education.

 

WASHINGTON, D.C., Oct. 5, 2017 – Internet2 will host its annual technical meeting, the Technology Exchange, for the research and education (R&E) community from October 15-18 at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco. The event will convene over 650 attendees from more than 250 institutions, 17 countries, and 46 states including network engineers, technologists, architects, scientists, operators, and administrators in the fields of advanced networking, trust and identity, information security, applications for research, and web-scale computing.

Program Highlights:

  • Keynote speaker Professor Kathy Yelick, associate laboratory director for Computing Sciences at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, to give the TechEX17 Exchange address, "The Superfacility: A New Supermodel for Seamless Scientific Discovery," on Monday, October 16 at 4 pm PT.
  • Meeting program includes 10 in-depth tutorials, 95 technical presentations, 50 working meetings, and 5 co-located workshops.
  • San Francisco JAZZ demonstration and brief presentation about the technical challenges faced when coordinating multi-site, concurrent data streams in hi-res/lo-loss environments.
  • Demonstrations on virtual and augmented reality technologies; denial-of-service attack mitigation service; and community-developed workflow components and APIs.
  • Screening of CODE: Debugging the Gender Gap, followed by a Q&A with technology leader Avis Yates Rivers.

Advanced Networking

It can take a domain scientist weeks to set up a circuit, meeting for hours with IT administrators to figure out exactly what is needed, approvals from their own campus along with the remote campuses to set up a simple circuit to transfer data between campuses on an ongoing basis. Talking about networks may as well be a foreign language to many domain scientists. As such, we need to make it easier for domain scientists to allocate and configure resources for scientific applications without needing to understand the details of bandwidth, circuits, and port numbers. This session will discuss the challenges in supporting domain science applications across long distances and multiple management domains.

Challenges to the next generation 5G communication networks and services are exponentially faster data rates, significantly lower network latency, massively increased mobile data volumes, and extended battery life for remote cellular devices. To bring this new generation to the mainstream it requires R&D collaborations and business models based on shared resources. Therefore in 5G the smart network convergence aims to integrate networking, computing and storage resources into one programmable and unified infrastructure. The advances in 5G open new possibilities, where the new educational model becomes learner-centric, skill-centric, on-demand and personalized.

Since the call for proposals late last year leading to a meeting in Tempe, AZ, in January to discuss the requirements for Internet2's next network architecture, working groups have been formed, there has been significant community outreach, staff input, and a few pilot projects have begun. This session will talk about the current framework and activities leading to the next network architecture for Internet2.

Trust and Identity

In 2016, a large number of Indiana University employees were victims of a phishing attack. This session will tell the story of how the university responded: with the broad deployment of Duo multi-factor authentication (MFA) across the organization and a comprehensive phishing education program. Topics covered will include a discussion of strategy, policy, security, financial, and technology considerations.

The identity management needs of collaborative organizations (COs) can differ significantly according to the structure of the organization and the requirements of its participants. This session will look at three very different approaches to meeting the needs of COs: Humanities Commons (a project of the Modern Language Association), the Murchison Widefield Array (a radio telescope in Western Australia), and CILogon 2.0.

Trust and Identity in Education and Research (TIER) provides a software suite and architecture that campuses can use for identity and access management activities like federated authentication via InCommon, managing groups and authorizations, operating a person/entity registry, and APIs for easy integration. What’s the latest with the TIER software suite? What is the TIER Program doing to help adoption? This session will answer these and other questions about the community-driven TIER effort. There will also be an overview on a joint effort with the Big Ten Academic Alliance Identity Management Taskforce to address the provisioning of identities for access to available services.
