WASHINGTON—Resources for the Future (RFF) board member Richard Schmalensee has been elected to lead RFF's Board of Directors. He will assume this role following Chairman Bowman Cutter's departure in October 2014, after which Cutter will remain a Board Chair Emeritus.

"It's a testament to RFF and Phil Sharp's leadership as its president that Dick Schmalensee will be the next chairman of the board," said Cutter. "Dick is a top-rank scholar with extensive government and private sector experience—the perfect combination to steward this organization over the next years. I am sure he will find, as I did, that chairing this unique and important think tank is both engaging and tremendously rewarding."

Chair-elect Schmalensee has been a member of RFF's Board of Directors since April 2009. He also currently serves as the Howard W. Johnson Professor and Dean Emeritus of the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as well as a director of the International Securities Exchange and the International Data Group.

"I am honored to be elected to the chairmanship of this extraordinary organization and will work closely with Phil Sharp to ensure its continued vitality and relevance," Schmalensee said. "RFF has been a leader in environmental and resource economics and a leading source of sound, objective analysis for policymakers for over 60 years. I am deeply appreciative of Bo Cutter's leadership of the board over the last three years and his contributions to making the institution stronger, more relevant, and intellectually exciting."

Schmalensee's own research has focused on industrial organization economics and its application to managerial and public policy issues, with an emphasis on antitrust, regulatory, and environmental policies. Schmalensee has authored or co-authored 11 books and more than 110 articles in professional journals and publications, and is the chairman of the editorial board of Competition Policy International.
