TRIGG BEACH WA/AUS (Wednesday 4th October 2017), Perth's metropolitan beaches are set to host a crop of Australia's best junior surfers, with the 2017/18 Rip Curl GromSearch Series presented by Flight Centre preparing to get underway at Trigg Beach on Friday.

After successful events in Victoria and New South Wales, the prestigious National series will stop off in Western Australia, with an exciting field of competitors converging from all corners of the country to compete.

Close to 100 frothing boys and girls are set to compete across a three-day window with divisions including; boys’ and girls’ 16 and under, 14 and under, and 12 and under.

WA grommets have been using the school holidays to fine tune their surfing skills, with competitors from as far north as Kalbarri and as far south as Albany preparing to compete in one of WA's biggest junior events of the year.

WA surfers set to headline competition later this week will be Under-16 State Champions Seth Van Haeften (Margaret River) and Emma Cattlin (Yallingup). While current Under-16 National Champion Jamaica Selby (Margaret River) will be also out to impress on home soil after recently representing Australia in Japan at the International Surfing Association (ISA) World Junior Championships.

They can all expect to face stiff opposition from a talented group of surfers travelling from NSW, VIC, SA and QLD.

Current Under-16 National Champion Xavier Huxtable (VIC) will be one to watch, as well as Logan Steinwede (NSW), Grace Knight (SA), and NSW sisters Bodhi and Cedar Leigh-Jones, who are amongst a dozen plus interstate competitors making their way to Western Australia for the third event of the series.

"We're always excited to see new surfers and their families travelling to WA to compete in the Rip Curl GromSearch," said Surfing WA Events Manager Justin Majeks. "It's a great test for our local surfers to go up against some of Australia's best and I'm excited to see how they perform against some quality opposition."
Participants can look forward to heaps of activities, plenty of giveaways, as well as hone their skills in the water. 2017 sees the introduction of a 'priority system' in several divisions across the series, allowing athletes to gain valuable experience with the same system used across all elite surfing events.

"I loved the GromSearch series as a kid. Travelling to different places, meeting new crew and having a good time on your holidays is what every grom wants to do," said professional surfer and current World Surf League (WSL) world number four Matt Wilkinson. "Throw in the chance to surf in the National final to try and represent Australia… it’s unreal!"
The Australian Rip Curl Gromsearch series allows surfers from around the country to compete against their contemporaries in a fun and engaging environment. Each result in the five-event series is awarded points that count towards a surfer’s GromSearch National rating, giving participants across the country the opportunity to compare their performances against their peers.

After the last event in Queensland, the top ranked surfers qualify for the Rip Curl GromSearch National Final (in their respective divisions), where they then compete for the chance to become the Australian GromSearch Champion.

The National Champion then represents Australia at the Rip Curl GromSearch International Final, held at a new location around the globe each year, against the best junior surfers in each participating country.
With parallel Rip Curl GromSearch Series in over 10 countries, it has become a crucial stepping-stone in the development of junior surfers. The list of previous GromSearch winners illustrates the prestigious history of the series, with World Surf League (WSL) competitors Gabriel Medina (Brazil), Tyler Wright (Australia), Owen Wright (Australia), Matt Wilkinson (Australia), Jordy Smith (South Africa), Kolohe Andino (USA) and Sally Fitz gibbons (Australia) among the list of former competitors and GromSearch International Final Champions.
