Liverpool, Merseyside, United Kingdom., January 13, 2012 - (PressReleasePoint) -
A woman struck by a car during childhood, will receive £9m compensation from the driver’s insurance company following a successful road accident claim, it can now be confirmed.

Leigh Ann Blinkhorn, now aged 23, was hit whilst crossing the A1064 at the age of 9. She suffered life threatening injuries as a result of the accident, including severe brain damage which left her in a coma.

After being found liable at the High Court, the driver’s insurance company will pay a settlement, that marks the largest payout ever received for a road traffic accident claim.

Ms Blinkhorn’s counsel John Foy QC revealed how his client needed two carers as she could become quite aggressive due to a personality change she endured after her accident. Her personal injury compensation includes a lump sum payment of £2,875,000 and index linked annual payments of £191,758 to cover the cost of care. These payments will be made for as long as she lives.

The delay in settlement has been attributed to the changing prognosis of Ms Blinkhorn’s condition and her stays at residential car homes. Ms Blinkhorn has since returned to her family home.

Mr Justice Popplewell praised the woman’s parents, saying: “I am pleased to be able to approve this settlement, which is fair and very much in Leigh’s best interests.

“I have been struck by the tireless care and dedication Joy and Colin have given to Leigh over so many years.

“It really is heart-warming and I hope that this settlement will bring a little enhancement to all their lives.”

Her injury solicitors said: “The award, one of the largest ever to be made, will provide our client with the financial security she clearly requires and indeed deserves.”
