THIEF RIVER FALLS, MINN. (November 19, 2010) –Northland Community and Technical College and 360° Center for Manufacturing and Applied Engineering have partnered to kickoff a new educational experience for 9th – 12th grade students.

Principals, superintendents, teachers, industry representatives, parents, and school board members are encouraged to attend this event. This is a new program under development and being launched in northwest Minnesota at Northland College’s Thief River Falls Campus. We are seeking partnerships with industry and high schools to establish teams which have the potential to compete in the VEX worldwide competition. The VEX Robotics Design System offers students an exciting platform for learning about areas rich with career opportunities spanning science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The VEX Robotics project encourages teamwork, leadership and problem solving among groups.
Through funding from 360°, a Center of Excellence in Manufacturing and Applied Engineering, Northland College will be able to provide equipment to participating high schools in 2011. Students participating in this program will learn the relationships between function and design, as well as troubleshooting, electrical controls, programming, fabrication techniques, teamwork, project management, critical thinking and problem solving. These skills are a tremendous asset for our youth as they continue on their career pathway.
Many industries in northwest Minnesota owe their success to innovative engineers and technicians. In order to maintain a competitive edge, a critical mission of northwest Minnesota is to ignite interest in young students for exciting STEM related careers. Northland Community and Technical College serves a critical role supporting rural industries and economic development.
We will have demonstrations of the VEX Robotics, along with mentors to answer questions, and a brief overview of what’s in store for this region.
