OmniCell and Commerce One Team to Provide Electronic Commerce Solution for the Healthcare Industry

PALO ALTO, Calif. and WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — Oct. 18, 1999 —OmniCell Technologies today announced that Rush Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago, Ill., has signed a subscription to OmniCell’s Automated Requisition and Procurement Service (ARPROS). As a charter member, Rush Presbyterian will initially provide OmniCell with its supplier information for its cath lab, fully automated by OmniSupplier cabinets. ARPROS is an automated procurement system powered by Commerce One (NASDAQ:CMRC), a leading provider of e-commerce solutions.

Rush Presbyterian, the flagship hospital for Rush Systems for Health, plans to use ARPROS to streamline its purchasing process, reduce operational costs and enable more strategic procurement planning. Starting with cardiovascular products, Rush Presbyterian will be able to purchase from its suppliers through the web-based ARPROS. In addition to medical supplies and equipment, Rush Presbyterian will be able to purchase a broad range of goods and services from suppliers currently transacting business through Commerce One MarketSite, the premier business-to-business marketplace portal. The system will eventually be configured to automatically reorder stock from its automated dispensing system when supplies hit the reorder point.

"OmniCell understands how a hospital operates and how supplies are purchased,” said Bob Hughes, administrator, Division of Cardiovascular and Critical Care Medicine, Rush Presbyterian Hospital. ”We perform a lot of tasks that involve hours of rework—wrong invoice numbers, incorrect pricing amounts, and insufficient information recorded. ARPROS gives buyers and suppliers an opportunity to save money through better communications tools, more accurate information and the elimination of redo work. We felt very comfortable making this decision because OmniCell has always been on the forefront of new technology and has always delivered on its promises. OmniCell’s ARPROS is a great way to maximize our productivity and reduce our costs.”

"With all of the changes and controls placed on the U.S. health system, healthcare organizations must maximize productivity and reduce costs in every possible way,” said Shelly Asher, president and chief executive officer of OmniCell Technologies. “OmniCell’s ARPROS eliminates a lot of rework and streamlines the procurement process. We are excited about having Rush Presbyterian as a charter member because they will provide significant input to our system.”

OmniCell recently announced a strategic alliance with Commerce One to create an online vertical trading community for the healthcare industry. OmniCell is an affiliate of Commerce One’s Global Trading Web of regional and vertical marketplace portals for business-to-business electronic commerce.

"The healthcare industry is only the first of many vertical portals that will be a part of our Global Trading Web,” said Chuck Shih, vice president of business strategy, services and affiliates for Commerce One's Global Trading Web. “With new customers like Rush Presbyterian, the Commerce One global trading community is growing rapidly, and we see vertical and affiliate portals as a key component of that growth.”
