Toronto, ON, September 29, 2010 (PressReleasePoint) -- SAFE International™, Canada's mobile self defense leaders are pleased to announce their new High School Cyberbullying Course. SAFE International™ has taught more than 100,000 high school students self defense skills since 1994 and have now added a course on Cyberbullying into their high school and junior high school services on www.highschoolselfdefense.com
For years, schools have offered Anti-Bullying programs, but now with the internet and all its benefits, there is a negative side, Cyber Bullying, another form of bullying which cannot be ignored. Cyberbullying is quite often an extension of traditional bullying and can take many forms including:
Sending texts or emails that are hurtful, hateful, harassing, or threatening physical harm.
Spreading rumours about someone in hopes to embarrass or cause mental and perhaps physical harm.
Sending personal or embarrassing information including pictures of others, all with the intention of intimidating, frightening, ridiculing, or harming someone else.
Pretending to be someone else with the intention of deceptive harm.
Social networking sites have become a major area where all of the above take place.
SAFE International™ has recognized that this topic can no longer be ignored and in traditional fashion, we have developed a program which is both memorable and effective in teaching our 3 R's philosophy of Recognize, React, and Respond. First students are taught how to recognize the different forms that cyber bullying make take, whether they be through texting, emailing or popular social networking sites. Students are then taught through discussion, case studies and interaction how to react to these forms of bullying whether it be to handle themselves, or to approach the proper authorities / parents on how to respond in the quickest and safest manner.
SAFE International is pleased to announce the launch of their NEW Cyber Bullying Prevention Program for students, grades 7 to 10. SAFE has also launched their new blog at How To Stop Bullying which addresses all forms of bullying including cyberbullying.
A few statistics that show why cyber bullying instruction should be mandatory are:
Eighty-one percent of youth said that others cyberbully because they think it's funny.
Almost 80 percent of teens said that they either did not have parental rules about Internet use or found ways around the rules.
Nearly 30 percent of teens wanted to seek revenge on those who cyberbullied them.
Only 11 percent of teens talked to parents about incidents of cyberbullying.
Over 70 percent of teens said that being able to block cyberbullies was the most effective method of prevention. Source: NCPC, National Crime Prevention Council.
SAFE International's founder has recently started the Self Defense Canada Blog http://www.selfdefensecanada.info and maintains relevant information on crime statistics, defensive methods and self defense strategies that every citizen can employ.
