Sangam (India) Limited, Bhilwara, has come forward and associated with the joint initiative by Denim Club India and The Textile Association (India), Rajasthan Unit for HIV and AIDS awareness and an awareness session was organised for the Officers and Technical Staff of Sangam (India) Limited, Bhilwara on 1st February, 2010.
The session included an interactive session for dispelling common myths surrounding HIV and screening of two short films produced under the AIDS JAAGO project, funded by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, namely Migration by Mira Nair, and POSITIVE by Farhan Akhtar.
The campaign by Denim Club India has a strong focus on the Textile, Apparel and Retail segments, since these segments employ migrant labour in large numbers. Companies can play a vital role in curbing the HIV infection rate by taking early action to prevent HIV and reducing stigma by spreading awareness in a large number of workers which will further propagate to their families and the larger community.
Expressing his views about the session Mr. S. M. Gupta, President, Sangam (India) Limited said “The session has served as eye-opener for our staff. Several myths and misconceptions have been clarified due to which a change in the response and attitude on the mention of HIV and AIDS is apparent among the staff members. The sessions today have acted as a catalyst for reducing stigma and discrimination against People Living with HIV and we will definitely continue with this good work."
Expressing his thoughts about the session at Sangam (India) Ltd., Mr. R. Dudeja, Founder, Denim Club India said, “We are privileged to have marked the beginning of the joint initiative with a reputed organisation like Sangam (India) Limited. We are thankful to them for their positive and encouraging response and we look forward to a long term association for increasing awareness and reducing stigma and discrimination attached with HIV and AIDS. ”
The year long HIV and AIDS awareness campaign with the theme "Do Something and Make A Difference" was launched on 1st December 2009 and will continue till 30th November, 2010. During this period, different segments and sections of civil society will be targeted through this campaign. The campaign will reach out to the youth in schools and colleges, the low income group workers and decision makers / senior executives in industrial establishments, and general public by way of arranging for interactive sessions.
