SCNM, ASU Biodesign Institute Collaborative Research Produces Treatment Products for Herpes-Related Cold Sores and Lesions

Ongoing research goal: additional treatment for certain cancers, human papilloma virus

TEMPE, Ariz. (July 14, 2014):  Collaborative laboratory research and case studies conducted by the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine (SCNM) and the Biodesign Institute at Arizona State University support the effectiveness of using botanical-based compounds and products to treat herpes-related cold sores and shingles-type lesions as well as targeting and reversing various cancers that may offer treatment for the human papilloma virus.

Now, a botanical-based product, Relief Blue©, that resulted from collaborative research and provides quick relief for people suffering from herpes-related cold sores is available online (

Relief Blue© is the result of research, efficacy tests and case studies over the past five years that have focused on treating diseases resulting from infections with various herpes viruses, including HSV-1, HSV-2 and the varicella-zoster virus which causes shingles.

We took a number of herbs that have historical use with anti-herpes activity and tested each herb to understand the mechanism that helped the herb kill the virus,” said Jeffrey Langland, Ph.D., Professor and Chair of the SCNM Research Department and a research assistant professor at the Biodesign Institute’s Center for Infectious Disease and Vaccinology. “In a lab environment, we created a blend that contained the six top herbs and began working with individual patients.  Working with naturopathic physicians, we treated about 500 patients with cold sores, general herpes and shingles-type lesions and our success rate has been between 90 and 95 percent.”

The motivation for the research began after researchers came across an old medical journal from a physician who lived 200 years ago which pointed to treatments from natural botanical extracts made from certain species of plants.  

“We know how these herbs work on the virus,” Langland said.  “The herbs target the virus at multiple sites, thereby inhibiting the virus which can’t make it through this protective gauntlet.“

The success of the research enabled the collaborative to identify and engage funders and investors. Langland said a significant percentage of profits from Relief Blue© will be directed back into funding ongoing research.

“Our lab is working on different types of botanicals and their effect on other conditions,” Langland said.  “In the near future, we have good evidence of another botanical that may effectively target the human papilloma virus.”

The group also has received approval to “try to create a blend of herbs that have efficacy in killing the HIV virus,” Langland said.
