Sussex’s Second Eleven pulled off an impressive victory yesterday over Somerset in their three-day Championship match at The Sutton Winson Academy Ground, Blackstone.
After beginning Day Three 40 runs ahead of their opponents, Luke Wells turned his unbeaten 43 into a fantastic 178 not out and he was well supported by Ashar Zaidi (55) as Sussex declared on 317 for 8.
That set Somerset a target of 264 to win but Sussex were determined not to let their good position slip and reduced the visitors to 12 for 3. James Burke (71) did offer the main resistance for Somerset but they could only reach 197 all out, handing Sussex victory by 66 runs.
Zaidi was the pick of the bowling as he claimed 5 for 35 whilst there were also scalps for Lewis Hatchett (2 for 19), Jon Lewis, Chris Liddle and Will Beer.
The Second Eleven are next in action from next Wednesday at Horsham in a three-day friendly, which will be a combined tri-series match against Hampshire and Surrey.
Sussex 2nd XI (200 and 317 for 8 declared), beat Somerset 2nd XI (254 all out and 197 all out) by 66 runs
