Sussex’s Second Eleven struggled on Day One of their three-day Championship match with Essex at Garon Park in Southend, as they were bowled out for 160.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, they came up against an incredible display of seam bowling from James Porter who ripped through the Sussex batting line-up, taking 8 for 48.

Ashar Zaidi top-scored with 22 for Sussex whilst Callum Jackson made 20 but none of the other batsman made any significant impression.

And the hosts went on to make 326 for 6 before the close of play as Greg Smith hit an unbeaten 151 for Essex. Zaidi (pictured) was the pick of the bowlers for Sussex, taking 4 for 61 whilst there were wickets for James Anyon and Matthew Hobden.

Play resumes at Garon Park at 11.00am this morning. Please click HERE for a PDF scorecard of yesterday’s play and for updates via the SussexSeconds Twitter feed.
