The Second Youth Olympic Games “Nanjing 2014″ officially opened

The 2nd Youth Olympic Games "Nanjing 2014" have been officially opened last night by the traditional lightning of the Olympic flame, and the images from the opening swiftly circulated the world.

Unlike in previous Games, this time there was no parade by the participants of the Games. Only the athletes in charge of carrying the national flags have walked the Olympic Stadium.

Montenegrin flag was carried by judpist Arso Milic. This was greeted from VIP boxes by the President of Montenegro Filip Vujanovic and the President of Montenegrin Olympic Committee Dusan Simonovic.

The President of IOC, Thomas Bach, has addressed around 3,800 athletes in Nanjing in his speech. "My dear young athletes. These are your Games. This is your moment. Let us all capture it – so get your smart phones out and let's set a record for selfies… By sending this selfie with the hashtag "YOG selfie", you are sending a strong message around the world. You are showing your passion for sport and for fair competition. You are demonstrating that Olympic sport reaches beyond competition. It is also about sharing, learning and making friends across the globe. You are here to enjoy the competitions and to deliver your personal best performance. You are here to experience and promote the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect. You are here to celebrate the Olympic spirit. Enjoy your Games!" said the President of IOC.

A ceremony has shown a part of a long and rich history, tradition and culture of Nanjing and China, as well as popular sights.

The Opening ceremony was attended by the President of the People's Republic of China Xi Jinping, Secretary General of United Nations Ban Ki-moon and IOC's honorary President Jacques Rogge.
