Secretary of the Interior appoints Deloitte Geospatial Leader Matt Gentile to National Geospatial Advisory Committee
Washington D.C. Feb. 26, 2013 – Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar has announced the appointment of Matt Gentile, principal, Deloitte Financial Advisory Services (FAS) LLP and leader of the Deloitte Geospatial practice, along with 12 other professionals, to serve as members of the National Geospatial Advisory Committee (NGAC). The committee provides recommendations on federal geospatial policy and management issues and advice on development of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI).
“We are pleased to welcome this distinguished set of new members to the National Geospatial Advisory Committee,” said Anne Castle, Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Water and Science, who serves as Chair of the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC). “The NGAC’s inclusion of a broad range of perspectives, governmental, tribal, private sector, and academic, enables it to provide valuable advice to federal agencies on the most pressing geospatial issues, and helps us make better progress toward our goal of seamless integration and accessibility of geospatial data.”
Mr. Gentile is a recognized thought leader and entrepreneur in the geospatial community, dedicating the past 16 years to working at the intersection of public policy and geospatial technology. He began his career as a White House staffer supporting environmental science and policy development in the White House Office on Environmental Policy in the mid-1990s. He went on to build businesses that focused on combining the distributive and collaborative power of the internet with the analytic and visualization capability of geographic information systems (GIS). In 1997, Mr. Gentile co-founded Syncline, a hosted geospatial services company. As CEO of Syncline, he quickly became an industry leader, revolutionizing how State, Local and Federal government published and shared geospatial data on the web with the flagship Map-Citi platform. In 2003, he co-founded Traverse Technologies, a geospatial analytics firm, which was acquired by Deloitte FAS in 2010.
“We congratulate Matt on his appointment to the NGAC,” said Robin Lineberger, chief executive officer, Deloitte Federal Government Services. “His dedication to helping people share, create and manage geospatial data at all levels of government will be an energizing and creative force toward the development of our nation’s spatial data infrastructure. Matt recognizes the integral role the NSDI can and must play for those in all walks of life – from farmers to first responders – and he is eager to collaborate with the many distinguished participants on the Council.”
The members of the NGAC report to the chair of the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC), which is the Federal interagency executive group responsible for providing leadership and direction in Federal geospatial programs.
