ON Semiconductor operates two assembly and test facilities in Vietnam that employ more than 1,500 people and produce energy efficient semiconductors used in automobiles, white goods and industrial equipment
DONG NAI, Vietnam – March 6, 2014 – ON Semiconductor Corporation (Nasdaq: ONNN), driving energy efficient innovations, today gathered to celebrate the success of its ON Semiconductor Vietnam (OSV) and ON Semiconductor Binh Duong (OSBD) manufacturing operations. These assembly and test facilities produce hybrid integrated circuits (HICs) and discrete power semiconductor solutions used in automotive, white goods and industrial applications.
Today’s ceremony was attended by more than 200 people including company executives, employees and Vietnam government officials.
“We are pleased to be a member of the growing technology business community here in Vietnam,” said Keith Jackson, president and chief executive officer (CEO) of ON Semiconductor, who spoke at today’s event held at OSV. “Our operations in Vietnam play in important role within our company’s global manufacturing network which services customers the world over. The energy efficient semiconductor products assembled and tested here are used in automobiles, air conditioners, industrial motor control and more. The products made here help conserve energy in the end-products in which they are implemented. It is also our goal that ON Semiconductor’s operations in Vietnam will also make a positive difference to the employees we hire, the communities in which we operate, and health of the local economy that we support.”
ON Semiconductor Vietnam (OSV) is located in Bien Hoa Industrial Zone II in Dong Nai Province. This subsidiary of ON Semiconductor was established when the company acquired the factory from SANYO Electric Co. Ltd in April 2012. ON Semiconductor then began work on upgrading and outfitting the facility to meet the company’s production needs.
To date the company has invested approximately $75 million USD to upgrade the OSV facility to include semiconductor clean room space and add semiconductor manufacturing equipment to ramp production.
- Staff at OSV has now reached approximately 1,500 employees.
- The OSV campus now includes 266,000-square-feet of space dedicated to production, warehouse, labs, offices, a work shop, a canteen and more.
- During the last two years, more than 100 OSV employees including engineers and technicians have received training at ON Semiconductor factories across the world. These employees have been developing and learning the new technologies needed to grow and improve OSV and are bringing that expertise and experience back to Vietnam.
- In November 2013, the company established a Global English Program for OSV and OSBD employees.
ON Semiconductor Binh Duong (OSBD) was established in 2013 when ON Semiconductor Corporation assumed control of one of Wonderful Saigon Electric’s facilities located at No. 30 Road 3, Vietnam – Singapore Industrial Park 1, Binh Duong Province. OSBD is a subsidiary of OSV and currently has approximately 125 employees.
Production at OSV has been ramping steadily. Once the factory is running at near-full capacity, ON Semiconductor expects to increase its capital expenditures and expand its staff as needed. Production expansion plans for OSV are a two-phase goal. First ON Semiconductor plans to increase production of Hybrid Integrated Circuits at OSV from its current capacity of 20 million products per year up to 50 million products per year. Secondly, the company will work to increase production of discrete power circuit technology at OSV from its current capacity of 500 million products per year.
“Key to the success of our aggressive expansion goals in Vietnam is cooperation and partnership with the local community,” said Bill Schromm, senior vice president of Operating Systems and Technology Group at ON Semiconductor. Mr. Schromm also attended the event. “The availability of local talent, with the technical, business and language skills needed to perform the skilled jobs, will be vital. In order for ON Semiconductor to successfully and seamlessly link our Vietnam operations to the company’s global network, our teams here will need to be bi-lingual in English. We look forward to working with the local community and the Vietnam government to support the technical training and language education that will be needed to foster the future growth and success here in Vietnam.”
