DECATUR, Ga. (April, 9 2014) – On Thursday, April 10, hall of fame basketball star Shaquille O’Neal is partnering with Feed The Children to deliver one semi tractor-trailer full of food and essentials to help 400 Decatur area families. The food and essentials will be distributed at 1 p.m. at the House of Hope Atlanta (The Greater Travelers Rest Baptist Church) at 4650 Flat Shoals Parkway.

Every personal care box contains children books provided by longtime partner Better World Books, helping feed minds as well as bodies. Better World Books matches each purchase made on www.BetterWorldBooks.com with a donation, book for book, and with each sale generating funds for literacy initiatives in the U.S. and around the world. Since its founding in 2003, the social enterprise has raised over $16 million for literacy and donated over 12 million books.
Nearly one in four children living in Decatur (27.2 percent) is considered impoverished. In fact, the number of children living in poverty in Georgia (672,000) could fill Turner Field more than 13 times.
House of Hope Atlanta (The Greater Travelers Rest Baptist Church), has pre-identified families receiving the boxes. Each family will receive a 25-pound box of food and a 10-pound box of personal care items. The boxes are designed to help a family of four for up to one week. Georgia Piedmont Technical College will provide free blood pressure screening and information regarding educational opportunities ranging from adult education, to GED testing, to truck driving, nursing and transit training programs.
“We are so thankful to Shaquille O’Neal for helping to provide food and essentials to children and their families,” said Erin Engelke, spokesperson for Feed The Children. "With Shaq’s generosity and the help of Georgia Piedmont Technical College and House of Hope Atlanta (The Greater Travelers Rest Baptist Church) we can further our mission to ensure no child or family goes to bed hungry.”
