HOUSTON – (March 17, 2014) – The Shepherd School of Music’s Opera Department and Chamber Orchestra will present its spring opera, Benjamin Britten’s “Albert Herring,” March 28 and 30 and April 1. The production will be directed by Richard Bado, director of Rice’s Opera Studies Program, and staged by guest director Brad Dalton.

The three-act comedic opera is regarded by critics as “one of the greatest comedic operas” of the 20th century. “Albert Herring” is a comedy that concerns an adolescent stunted by the demands of village traditions.

“We’ve chosen to set this in the 1950s, an era fraught with societal rules,” Bado said.

Performances will take place in Wortham Opera Theatre at the Shepherd School as part of the Leon Wilson Clarke Opera Series. Performances March 28 and 30 will begin at 7:30 p.m. The April 1 performance will begin at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $12 for general admission and $10 for students and senior citizens. For tickets, call the Shepherd School Concert Office at 713-348-8000.
