Nation’s Largest Grassroots Conservation Organization Praises Alex Sink’s Strong Commitment to Protecting Florida’s Environment & Public Health
PINELLAS COUNTY, FL - Today, the Florida Chapter of the Sierra Club announced its endorsement of Alex Sink in the election for Florida’s 13th Congressional District.
“We need a staunch defender of the people of Florida and the Sierra Club has found this champion in Alex Sink. She has the intelligence and guts to handle the complex issues debated in Washington as well as the passion and commitment to protect Florida’s environment,” said Cecilia Height, chair of the Florida Chapter of the Sierra Club’s political committee. “We need Alex Sink to represent the people’s interests in Washington, not a climate-denying former lobbyist representing special interests and big polluters.”
During her tenure as Florida’s Chief Financial Officer, Alex Sink fought to hold BP accountable for the Deepwater Horizon oil spill that threatened Florida’s beaches and fishing industry. Alex Sink has been a longstanding opponent of drilling off Florida’s coasts and recognizes the connections between strong environmental protections and a thriving economy. In addition, Alex Sink wants to work to address climate disruption and its growing impact on Florida, which is already threatened by sea level rise.
“Alex Sink’s interests lie in protecting Florida and its environment, unlike her opponent,” said David Harbeitner, a leader with the Sierra Club in Pinellas County. “Alex shares Pinellas County residents’ concerns about the important connection between our environment and our economy. The Sierra Club knows she will work to ensure an appropriate balance is found to support economic growth and protect the quantity and quality of our precious water resources for the long-term.”
Alex Sink’s main challenger, David Jolly, has worked for years as a special interest lobbyist and has worked for increased oil drilling near Florida's Gulf beaches. Jolly also denies human impacts on climate disruption and doesn't believe the federal government should act to slow down global warming and sea level rise.
“Alex Sink has proven that she is willing to fight to protect Pinellas County's beautiful beaches and thriving tourism industry from oil spills and sea level rise. That's a sharp contrast to Lobbyist David Jolly who denies the twin threat that oil drilling and rising seas from climate change pose to Pinellas beaches," said Frank Jackalone, Sierra Club’s Florida staff director. "The Sierra Club will proudly mobilize our members toward Sink’s candidacy for Florida’s 13th Congressional seat.”
