WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Sierra Club launched a new digital ad campaign today, thanking members of Illinois’ Congressional delegation for supporting the Production Tax Credit for Renewable Energy and American wind industry jobs. The digital ads thank representatives Mike Quigley (D-IL 5th District), Jan Schakowsky (D-IL 9th District), Brad Schneider (D-IL 10th District), Tammy Duckworth (D-IL 8th District), Cheri Bustos (D-IL 17th District), Robin Kelly (D-IL 2nd District), Bobby Rush (D-IL 1st District) and William Enyart (D-IL 12th District) for their legislative leadership and frequent public support for wind energy development.
The PTC is widely acknowledged as a critical part of American wind power’s development into a mainstream source of electricity and one of the biggest, fastest, cheapest ways to reduce carbon emissions while creating good-paying jobs and saving customers money. These representatives’ continued support of this tax incentive’s renewal is vital for the industry’s long-term growth and the digital ad campaign, which is designed to run throughout the Prairie State during the Congress’ recess, thanks them for their efforts. An example of the ads can be found here.
“With Congress in recess, these ads congratulate and encourage most of Illinois’ Congressional delegation for protecting public health and creating good paying jobs,” said Dave Hamilton, Director of Clean Energy for Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal campaign. “Unfortunately, some other representatives are letting those benefits blow away by failing to act to renew the PTC.”
The PTC expired at the end of last year, in part because of new opposition from groups backed by the billionaire Koch Brothers and other dirty fuels interests who’ve also fought to preserve the $4 billion in annual tax breaks for the oil and gas industry. The PTC is arguably one of the best bets we’ve made on clean, domestic energy by encouraging huge investments and creating good American jobs, while simultaneously cutting air and water pollution.
American wind power fosters economic development in all 50 states. Wind supports over 17,000 well-paying manufacturing jobs at over 550 facilities across 43 states and Illinois is at the heart of wind energy manufacturing and capacity. Nationwide, the wind industry employs up to 85,000 American workers and produces enough clean energy to power over 15.5 million homes. Wind energy helps conserve more than 30 billion gallons of fresh water each year compared with other energy sources. According to the American Wind Energy Association, if growth remains steady, the industry will produce 20 percent of America’s electricity by 2030. The goal of these ads is to make this estimate a reality.
