Sir Ben Gill CBE was a member of John Innes Centre Governing Council from 2002 until his untimely death last week. During his time on our Governing Council Sir Ben oversaw, in his capacity as representative of the Trustees of the John Innes Foundation, the cementing of constructive interactions between the Foundation and the Centre in which scientific excellence was placed paramount.
Sir Ben’s contributions to JIC were wide-ranging: he took a role in development of young scientific talent, yet also he was a major participant in establishing financial sustainability for the JIC and in overseeing its development to that of an independent institution in 2011.
Despite a long illness, Sir Ben maintained his interest and positive engagement until the last few days of his life. Sir Ben’s contributions to the JIC cannot be overestimated.
