Amid the growing number of Filipinos who rely on mobile internet, wireless services leader Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) has expanded its data offers to provide subscribers with seamless connectivity even when out of the country.

Smart now offers the All-Day Surf Abroad, an affordable, shock-proof mobile data roaming package that allows prepaid and postpaid subscribers to stay connected online in over 40 overseas destinations for as low as P450 per day.

The country’s first data roaming for prepaid subscribers

With All-Day Surf Abroad, Smart makes data roaming service available to prepaid subscribers – a first in the country.

This highly anticipated service is our response to the growing demand for uninterrupted mobile connectivity not only in the country but also abroad, as more and more Filipinos are relying on mobile data in making informed decisions and meaningful interactions,” said Charles A. Lim, Smart Executive Vice President and Head of Wireless Consumer Division.

Lim noted that mobile data usage on PLDT’s wireless segment surged dramatically to 121 percent over the past year, while mobile internet revenues jumped 77 percent, from P1.7 billion to P3.7 billion, in the same period.

“With All-Day Surf Abroad, Smart takes the pulse of the market to provide them with unmatched mobile connectivity as they travel the world. In doing so, Smart also reaches the untapped prepaid data roaming segment, creating new revenue streams for the company,” added Lim.

Smart Prepaid users may enjoy all-day mobile surfing for only P500 per day on Smart’s roaming partners in top Asian destinations,  which include Hong Kong (via Hutchison); Indonesia (Indosat); Japan (NTT DoCoMo); Macau (Hutchison) Malaysia (DiGi and CelCom); Singapore (Starhub); South Korea (KT); Taiwan (FarEastOne); Thailand (True); and Vietnam (Vinaphone).

Upon arriving at their destination, prepaid subscribers may register to the service by simply dialing *133# and then selecting Smart’s roaming partner-network. Smart Prepaid subscribers may enjoy the service between 12:00 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. on the date of activation.

The country’s largest roaming network for postpaid subscribers

On the other hand, Smart Postpaid subscribers may enjoy all-day mobile surfing on the country’s largest roaming network, which covers 41 destinations – twice the size of competitor.

Smart Postpaid users may use mobile internet for only P450 per day in select destinations in Asia and Oceania1, and for P550 per day in major destinations in Europe, Africa, Middle East and the United States.2

To register to All-Day Surf Abroad, Smart Postpaid subscribers simply have to text SURFABROAD450 or SURFABROAD550 to 211 upon reaching their destination. Subscribers may also subscribe to the service via the Smart Online Store (

All-Day Surf Abroad for postpaid subscribers is valid for 24 hours, starting from the time of activation, and is also the only service in the country that allows for automatic selection to available roaming networks without any risk of additional charges, giving subscribers much greater convenience.

Anti-bill shock and Toll-Free Roaming Hotline

Apart from providing subscribers with seamless connectivity, Smart’s new data roaming products allows subscribers to control their roaming expenses and dispel fears over incurring huge bills, said Michele Curran, Smart Data and International Services Head.

“By pegging our All-Day Surf Abroad package rates to pesos, subscribers have a clear idea of their bill so they are able to manage their roaming expenses better. We have also set up safeguards in our system so our subscribers may make the most of their roaming subscription – no more, no less,” said Curran.

On one hand, prepaid subscribers are assured they won’t be charged beyond what they have already paid for, while postpaid subscribers will receive a notification prior to the expiration of their All-Day Surf Abroad subscription, so they may promptly decide to either turn it off or renew it.

“We have also set up a toll-free 24-hour Smart Roaming Hotline at +6328488878, which subscribers may contact for immediate guidance on their roaming concerns,” said Curran.

Richer travel experience

With All-Day Surf Abroad, Smart Prepaid and Postpaid subscribers no longer need to put their online life on hold once they step out of the country.

“They may enjoy a richer travel experience knowing they have instant access to online information, means to update their social networking sites instantly, and communicate with their friends and loved ones using their favorite mobile chat apps anytime,” said Curran.
