Smart's CSR, network transformation, and marketing programs receive citations at the Asia Communication Awards in Singapore.

Smart Communications was recently honored in Singapore for its corporate social responsibility program that generated a positive impact on underserved learning communities in the Philippines.

In ceremonies at the Asia Communication Awards (ACA) organized by industry publication Total Telecom, the Smart School-in-a-Bag won the Social Contribution Award for 2018.

The School-in-a-Bag is a big backpack containing devices and digital educational content. It is donated to public schools, especially those in remote areas that do not have electricity. The bag contains a laptop, tablets, TV, a solar panel with battery, pocket Wi-Fi, and various digital and printed educational content aligned with the official curriculum.

The donation package, which costs P100,000, also includes teacher training and yearlong monitoring. While Smart has donated several bags, it has also successfully called on organizations and individuals to sponsor School-in-a-Bag units. So far, Smart and its partner donors have delivered 44 School-in-a-Bag packages to learning communities all over the country.

School-recipients of the Smart School-in-a-Bag have reported enhanced literacy and heightened interest in learning among their students. Those interested to help can email JLBayhonan@smart.com.ph for more details.

Aside from winning the Social Contribution Award, Smart received a “Highly Commended” citation under the Network Transformation Initiative category. Smart and its parent company PLDT have committed historic levels of resources to support network transformation. This year, capital expenditures are expected to reach P58 billion.

Aiming to bring world-class connectivity to Filipinos all over the country, Smart accelerated the deployment of Long Term Evolution (LTE), LTE-Advanced, and carrier aggregation technology by re-equipping cell sites with low-frequency and high-frequency bands for improved coverage, capacity, and speeds. Carrier aggregation is the capability of LTE-A to combine two or more radio frequency bands to deliver bigger bandwidth and faster data speeds.

Third-party tests have noted improvements on Smart’s network. Independent mobile analytics firm OpenSignal has cited Smart for having the Philippines’ fastest LTE network. Apart from winning the best in 4G LTE download speed award from OpenSignal, Smart was also cited for having the best overall download speed, best 4G latency performance, and best 3G latency performance.

Meanwhile, the pivot of Smart value brand TNT from a “Talk ‘N Text” brand to a digital brand was highly commended under the category Best Brand Campaign. TNT repositioned itself as a brand connecting young friends or tropas through affordable services like the Tropa Apps.
