Smeal's multimedia team recognized for providing valuable student service

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- A group of Smeal College of Business staff members were recently recognized for their efforts to provide students with professional portraits for their LinkedIn profiles. The Penn State Information Technology Resource Responsibility award was granted to the Resource, Instruction and Information Technology (RIIT) Group’s Multimedia Team.

Members of the Multimedia Team — including Ian Nalepa, Jonathan Beightol, Wallington Del Castillo, Chad Fuller and Matthew Ross — debuted their professional portrait service last year at a mock career fair for Smeal undergraduate students. The team developed a process allowing students to register for a session, visit a kiosk to sit for the portrait and receive the files by email after they are taken.

“This new initiative and collaboration allows us to provide comprehensive support for student professional development with regard to social media.”

“Through this service, our Multimedia Team was able to provide a tremendous amount of value to our students at a relatively low cost,” said Ginger Breon, assistant dean for administration and chief information officer. “This is a great example of the services we are able to provide to the college through the committed talent in our RIIT Group.”

Meg Handley, director of Smeal’s Career and Corporate Connections office, said that having a professional portrait can help students stand out as they search for jobs and interact with employers.

“More and more companies are using LinkedIn as a resource to find quality candidates; having a complete profile is important, and that starts with a professional photo,” Handley said. “This new initiative and collaboration allows us to provide comprehensive support for student professional development with regard to social media.”

The Resource Responsibility award recognizes a Penn State Information Technology individual or group that significantly helped reduce or consolidate resources needed to deliver an IT service. The awards were presented by Kevin Morooney, vice provost for Information Technology at Penn State, earlier this summer.

The RIIT Group provides services to support instruction, research and administrative processes within Smeal through strategic integration of information technology.
