SOCAN once again participated in a handful of events and activities at the 2014 edition of the North by Northeast Music, Interactive and Film Festival and Conference, which took place June 13-22 in Toronto.
On June 20, SOCAN and the American performing rights organization SESAC co-sponsored an early-evening “day party” mixer at the Edward Day Gallery on Queen Street West, inviting showcasing acts and key influencers to meet and network. Attendees included hip-hop singer-songwriter Spesh K; Kevin Young, keyboardist for the recently reunited band Moist, and regular contributor to SOCAN’s Words + Music magazine; music publisher and past SOCAN President Mark Altman, of Morning Music; and music publisher Tony Tobias, of Pangaea Media & Music.
The next day, SOCAN presented another networking mixer, this time at The Mod Club, in advance of the SOCAN-sponsored, Beat Academy-presented, USA-versus-Canada “Battle of the Americas” event. Rapper Mindbender and publishers Vivian Barclay of Warner Chappell Music Canada and Jodie Ferneyhough of CCS Rights Management were among the attendees at the event.

After the mixer, the beat battle featured five rounds between the Canadian and American teams. Team Canada consisted of Will Ridge, Wild Blue, TNB Beatz, PiTT Tha KiD, NeoMaestro, Mike F. The Hitman, Chef Byer, Beat Busta, T-Lo, Jay Glavany, C-Sharp and J Reid. Team USA consisted of Trakk Sounds, Tony Dark, Kush Skywalker, King Henry, Jameil Aossey, City of Dreams, Point 1, Phinestro, Mozaic, King Dion, Logic, and Dual Output. Special Guest Judges were Jake One (producer for Rick Ross, Drake), Symbolyc One (producer for Beyoncé, Kanye West, Jay-Z) and The Legendary Young Guru (Engineer to Jay-Z), and there were performances by Téhu, Fresh Kils and Luu Breeze.
As always, SOCAN sponsored the pocket-sized NXNE gig guide – an indispensable tool for navigating one's way through all of the performances in the festival portion of NXNE. And SOCAN staff were out at the music showcases to connect with members and potential members.
