SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — July 6, 2010 —Dr. Spencer C. Tucker, author, editor, and Senior Fellow in Military History for ABC-CLIO, spoke at the International Symposium in Commemoration of the 60th Anniversary of the Korean War. Dr. Tucker's speech, "The Korean War, 1950-1953: From Maneuver to Stalemate" addressed the military aspects of the conflict and was presented on June 24.

Organized by the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses (KIDA), the theme of this year's conference was “Global Korea beyond the Korean War”. KIDA, a defense think tank specializing in research projects and assisting in policy-making to protect the security of Korea, hosts a number of conferences each year to strengthen the nation's international military relations. This year's Symposium was a meaningful event for Korea, representing not only a sense of closure to the war, which officially began 60 years ago this June 25, but also the country's hopes of moving forward to create a new global identity.

Both local and international experts presented on topics pertaining to defense policy, economics, and social responsibility, and discussed the impacts that the conflict has and will continue to have on Korea and its military and civil relationship with the world. Dr. Tucker was selected to speak at this year's event because of his extensive background in military history, specifically his study of the Korean War. Dr. Tucker edited ABC-CLIO'sEncyclopedia of the Korean War: A Political, Social and Military Historyin 2000, and recently completed a second edition of the award-winning encyclopedia, published in April.

A Senior Fellow since 2003, Dr. Tucker has been instrumental in establishing ABC-CLIO as the premier military history reference publisher in the country. His interest in military history began while a student at the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) and was only enhanced by a Fulbright Fellowship in France and while serving as a captain in military intelligence at the Pentagon during the Vietnam War. Although he concentrated on Modern European History in his graduate studies, he became interested in all periods of military history. He taught at the university and college level for 36 years, with the first 30 being at Texas Christian University and the last 6 as holder of the John Biggs Chair of Military History at VMI.

The conference took place at the Grand Hyatt Seoul, in South Korea, June 21-24, 2010. For more information, visitwww.kida.re.kr/eng/.
