When the director of a vehicle tracking company heard about Terry Williams’ UK sponsored tractor ride, he realised that a portable tracking unit would make an ideal donation.
The ride in a Landlegend tractor is to honour our fallen heroes in Afghanistan, including the Sunday Mirror reporter. It began on May 2nd and will take approximately 276 days.

“The event has particular personal significance for me,” comments Richard Harris, head of AutoAlert Ltd, “as my cousin is in the army and is due to serve in Afghanistan.”

At each location, events have been organised, such as at the local football stadium, the London Eye and the museums.

It is hoped to raise funds to provide gift packages to the soldiers and support the families of those who have been injured or killed. The organisers also want to petition for the soldiers to be eligible for a battle award.

AutoAlert has donated a portable tracking unit which Terry has on his tractor.

“People can see where in the UK he is,” explained Richard. “I will let them keep the unit afterwards so they can auction at the end to raise more money.

Richard is also thinking of a paid for iPhone app as another way to raise money.

Footnote to Editor:

Infantryman never die, they march over the hills and far away.
Terry Williams is ex-Army and served in the Light Infantry regiments now renamed The Rifles from 1972 until 1986.
He volunteered to drive the tractor as he has a nephew serving with 42 Commando Royal Marines and he lost a good friend in Afghanistan who was serving with The Rifles.
As an ex Light Infantryman he also wanted to honour The Rifles for their courage and sacrifice and all of our fallen heroes.
The group known as GB United was organised to show support for troops in Afghanistan. Later it decided that they would like to help the families that have lost a loved one in Afghanistan and still be able to support our troops, hence why they chose Afghan Heroes Charity.
Terry will be totally alone on the journey with no support crew or back up, just his own resources and relying upon his military training as an infantryman.
The tractor drive is a journey that he wanted to make and hopefully the whole country would like to join in along the route to show their support for our troops.
The route and planning took 18mths to two years, even in the present economic situation individuals kept the idea alive, striving for sponsorship.
Several Companies like AutoAlert have very kindly donated items for the auction, also several Premier and Championship football clubs have agreed to donate signed team shirts for the auction.
Some of Whiskey distilleries and local breweries have offered merchandise to auction.
The £4,500 to £5,000 fuel bill is largely funded from Terry’s own pocket to minimise the impact on monies raised for the Afghan Heroes Charity to help support our troops.
Terry has managed to get a fuel card account with the Fuelcard Company, and a small amount of the monies raised will be used to pay for the fuel.
All food, campsite equipment and other bills are being funded by Terry at personal cost.
The shear will of a few and Terry’s determination to complete the journey, even if it takes everything he owns is astonishing.
A Sunday Mirror reporter, was killed whilst embedded with American troops.
