The Great Adventure People raise $2,000 (£1,270) in a spur-of-the-moment act of kindness inspired by the company's Core Values

Gap Adventures staff have been inspired to raise money by giving away a company-wide competition prize.

To celebrate its 20th anniversary, Gap Adventures is currently raising money to fund the building and support of a permanent vision centre in Cambodia. Working with Seva Canada, the company is helping those who are visually impaired and aiming for an eradication of preventable and treatable blindness.

To mark the 20 years, founder Bruce Poon Tip also initiated a contest for employees with a prize of the ultimate concert experience.

Inspired by the Core Values of the company, staff had to make videos highlighting how to ‘Do The Right Thing’ and ‘Change People’s Lives’. The lucky winner then used his prize to invite pledges from his fellow co-workers.

At stake were two VIP box tickets to Neil Young’s Annual Bridge School Benefit Concert on 23 October in Mountain View, California. The show featured such music legends as Pearl Jam, Elvis Costello and Billy Idol.

Just two hours after the competition winner was announced, the company was buzzing with the news that he was auctioning a ticket to the staff member who could raise the most money for the vision centre in Cambodia.

“What started as just a cool contest quickly evolved into something much bigger. In true Gap Adventures fashion, it has turned into a way for people to pay-it-forward and really 'live' our core values,” says Bruce Poon Tip, founder of Gap Adventures.

Gap Adventures is on its way to raising $60,000 to establish a permanent vision centre to help restore sight to thousands of rural Cambodians.
