The sterilization of surgical equipment and supplies is important to minimize the spread of infections to patients. The surgical equipment in need of sterilization includes clamps, scalpel blade handles, retractors, forceps, and scissors. Typically, surgical equipment that needs to be sterilized is placed on an instrument tray and packaged within at least one layer of a sterilization wrap. The wrapped object is then sterilized within the sterilization wrap. Sterility of the object is maintained by keeping the sterilization wrap package sealed until immediately prior to use.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently changed the guidelines for sterilization packaging including sterilization wraps and this is currently an important topic for the companies. The FDA guidance now requires Maintenance of Package Integrity (MPI) testing for all sterilization packaging products. The MPI protocol incorporates both events and time together to determine the integrity of the sterilized package. Companies such as Kimberley Clark had previously tested event-related sterility maintenance separate from time-related sterility maintenance. The more vigorous MPI test combines the two tests into a single protocol.
