Students Learn Global Health and Development at IITGN

Students from various institutes learnt how to contribute to global health and development at Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar.


Ahmedabad, Gujarat, June 18, 2015 -(PressReleasePoint)-  Students from various institutes learnt how to contribute to global health and development at Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) in a month long event called – ‘Summer Institute on Global Health and Development’– at Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar which concluded on June 125, 2015. Over 40 students took part in the event which was jointly organized by IITGN and University of Saskatchewan, Canada under the support of Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Limited (GACL).

A PhD student of Biological Engineering at IITGN Sanjay Kumar who was a participant of the event said, “Taking part in the event has enabled me to connect my work to the social needs and issues in a great manner. The event has been very beneficial in that way. I have also connected to various experts with whom I can collaborate in future.

Vineet Karlapalem, a student of Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Tuljapur, said “I learnt so much about and also realized the scope and potentials of this field.”
 
The Summer Institute, through pedagogy and research, offered a unique opportunity to engage, empower and prepare young researchers in their global pursuit for a healthy, equitable and sustainable world for all. Through cutting edge research drawing from diverse social sciences and humanities disciplines and utilizing interdisciplinary methodologies, the Summer Institute explored how the scientific community at large can contribute to a sharper understanding of the complex interlinkages of health and development.

Nirali Chandrani, CSR Officer at GACL, said, “Looking at the outcome of the workshop and the remarks forom the participants, I feel that there should be more such events.”

One of the nine professors from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, Prof Raj Srinivasan said, “We really enjoyed taking part in the workshop. We will look towards continuing the collaboration and consider bringing a group of people from our university to IITGN to pursue collaborative research. ”

At the end of the workshop, the students submitted project proposals in the area of public health. The proposals will be digitally published in an abstract booklet and will be made available on amazon.co.inpublished in online journals.
 
Summer Institute convener from IITGN, One of the coordinators of the event, Prof Tannistha Samanta of IITGN said, “Through talks, debates and hands-on sessions, we We have provided taught the participantsstudents with appropriate intellectual tools to address, articulate and critique the contemporary global health challenges.the appropriate methods of researching, how to do it, how to articulate research questions and other intellectual tools. Now I believe participants have gone away with the understanding and knowledge to conduct their own research in a more effective waythey can go back and work on their studies and researches in a more relevant and effective manner.”
