UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The Tewaaraton Foundation announced its watch list of 50 student-athletes for college lacrosse's top award Thursday night and two Penn State student-athletes, Shane Sturgis (Downingtown, Pa.) and Austin Kaut (Morton, Pa.), were named.
Sturgis and Kaut have led the Nittany Lions to a 2-1 record and a No. 9 ranking in the national polls ahead of Saturday's clash at No. 19 Ohio State. Sturgis leads NCAA Division I in goals per game (4.67) and points per game (6.00) and has yet to be held to less than five points in a game this season. Sturgis is already a two-time Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week.
His senior counterpart, Kaut, had his best game of the young season at No. 4 Notre Dame, supplying 13 saves in an 8-7 win. Last year's Ensign C. Markland Kelley, Jr. Award as the nation's top goalie, Kaut is on the Tewaaraton list once again. Kaut was named a semifinalist for the award last season.
The Tewaaraton Award Selection Committee is made up of top collegiate coaches and is appointed annually by the Tewaaraton Foundation. Potential additions will be announced March 20 and April 10 with the semifinal list of 25 student-athletes being named April 24. Five finalists will be announced May 8 and will be invited to the May 29 ceremony held in Washington, D.C.
